Shabbat Dinner and Sigd Celebration

Friday, November 13, 2015 - 06:00pm
What is Sigd?

Sigd is a unique festival celebrated by Ethiopian Jews 49 days after Yom Kippur.
The word Sigd in Ethiopic means "to worship" or loosely translated as "bowing". It signifies the reverence to as well as rememberance of the Covenant made when the Torah was given to Moses on Mount Sinai. On this day, the Beta Israel community commemorates this covenant with a walk to the highest point on a nearby mountain, symbolizing Mt. Sinai. During the procession up the mountain, verses from the Book of Ezra and Nehemiah are read for it is a day of Fasting, Reverence and Reflections. Afterwards, a feast is held as the fast is broken and the community celebrates the gift of life.
